Self portrait exploring chiaroscuro

I learned that chiaroscuro was using light and dark to create an image. I thought that charcoal would be the best medium to use. I began this image with hope but felt it was too messy so I abandoned the idea. I then used charcoal pencils on another image. I think this one worked better but could still do with improving.  I feel that I could produce a better image with paint.
